 Columbia’s Essays

ApplicantLab provides exclusive step-by-step advice, including videos, brainstorming, and writing exercises to help you answer all of CBS’s questions and determine which of your stories most proves your fit with the Columbia Business School  community:
  • Goal: What is your immediate post-MBA professional goal? (50 characters maximum)
  • Essay #1: Through your resume and recommendations, we have a clear sense of your professional path to date. What are your career goals over the next 3-5 years and what, in your imagination, would be your long-term dream job? (500 words)
  • Essay #2: Why do you feel Columbia Business School is a good fit for you? (250 words)
  • Essay #3 (NEW for 2020-2021): Tell us about your favorite book, movie or song and why it resonates with you (250 words)
  • Optional Essay:
        • Is there any further information that you wish to provide the Admissions Committee? If so, use this space to provide an explanation of any areas of concern in your academic record or your personal history. This does not need to be a formal essay. You may submit bullet points. (Maximum 500 Words)
  • NOTE! The “Deferred Enrollment” candidates (those who are currently in their final year of college or graduate school) have different questions:
    • Essay #1: How is a Columbia MBA going to help you? (250 words maximum)
    • Essay #2: What has been your favorite class, and why? (250 words maximum)
    • Essay #3: (NEW for 2020-2021): Tell us about your favorite book, movie or song and why it resonates with you (250 words)
      • Note: this question has not yet been officially confirmed, but in the past question 3 for deferred applicants was the same 3rd question as the regular applicants
        • Deferred applicants only need to submit one letter of recommendation
  • Re-applicants to Columbia:
    • If you’re applying more than 12 months after your last application, you may be treated as a brand-new applicant, and thus need to re-submit everything all over again.
    • Otherwise:
      • Need only submit one letter of recommendation this time around
      • Need to update the relevant fields in the application form around employment
      • Do not HAVE to re-write the other essays, but MUST write at least this re-applicant essay:
        • How have you enhanced your candidacy since your previous application? Please detail your progress since you last applied and reiterate how you plan to achieve your immediate and long term post-MBA professional goals. (Maximum 500 words)

Here are just a few 3rd-party verified testimonials of ApplicantLab users accepted to Columbia Business School!

ApplicantLab got me into Columbia Business School!

When initially considering ApplicantLab I thought it might potentially be a waste of money but that I’d give it a shot before a gave consultants a couple thousand dollars or more to help me through this process.

I never ended up using a one on one consultant because ApplicantLab helped me organize my thoughts and goals in a way that put together a compelling business school application.

I would recommend ApplicantLab to anyone!

– (JasonP, Accepted to Columbia Business School)

I utilized ApplicantLab for every aspect of my application (resume, essays, interviews, recommendations, etc) as the tool has advice for anything you could think of, as well as things you may not think of!

Ultimately I was accepted to CBS (my dream school).

Not only that, I received a generous fellowship from CBS, which most people told me was a significant reach for me!

I strongly believe it would be beneficial for every MBA applicant to utilize ApplicantLab; Maria has put a great service together, and the price is almost certainly cheaper than any other admissions consultant service.
